Arthur
J. Dunn, 58, ended a more than two-and-a-half
year battle with highly aggressive brain cancer
on Friday, August 3, 2007, in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
Art was born in Greenfield on April 21, 1949,
the son of the late Frederick and Emilie (Glabach)
Dunn. He was a lifelong resident of Greenfield,
with the exception of short periods of time while
working in other states.
He attended Greenfield High School, graduating
in 1967, and went on to trade school. He earned
his electrician's license and was a member of
IBEW Locals 36 and 7, as well as Local 968 in
Vienna, West Virginia. He was employed by Smith
College in Northampton as an electrician for over
twenty years. Prior to Smith, he worked for various
electrical contractors in Massachusetts, Maine,
and West Virginia.
He enlisted in the US Army in 1969, holding the
rank Sergeant E-5, and served in Vietnam from
1970 to '71. He was honorably discharged in 1972,
after serving at the United States Military Academy,
at West Point, NY.
Art was a lifelong boating enthusiast, having
a passion for and restoring classic wooden boats,
including one originally belonging to his parents.
Until his diagnosis, he was an active corporate
member of the Franklin County Boat Club, serving
as Treasurer for many years. He enjoyed many boating
trips with family and good friends.
Art was also a British sports car enthusiast,
and enjoyed taking on restoration and renovation
projects - whether they be a car, boat, or home.
Above all, though, Art loved his family. His most
fulfilling and loving job was that of father and
grandfather; anyone who knew Art and his kids,
knew they were utterly devoted to one another,
and his legacy is having taught them to be devoted,
patient, and unconditionally loving parents -
and to have fun!
Art is survived by his wife and life partner of
more than twenty years, Amy Holich-Dunn; his son
Bryan and wife Erica of Westhampton; his daughter,
Kelly and her fiance, Jeremy Gilbert of Gill;
and two beautiful grandchildren, Katelynn and
Jonathan Dunn. Art's spirit will shine on, when
Kelly and Jeremy welcome Art's next grandchild
this winter. He also leaves behind his unwavering
and always-present companions on this journey,
Gidget and Tucker.
True to the way he lived his life, Art fought
this battle with dignity, courage and an amazing
sense of humor. He continually defied - and redefined
- the odds, inspiring everyone who knew and loved
him, both personally and from afar.
We are honored and deeply grateful that
the following donors have chosen to
celebrate the life of Art Dunn with a memorial
gift to T.H.E. BRAIN TRUST.
