BRAINTMR Administrative Hints by John Barry Leonard is a great resource.
How can I become more involved and support this community?
1. Any information posted to the BRAINTMR mailing list regarding diagnoses or treatments, etc., reflects ONLY the opinion of the individual posting the message. Any information pertaining to your health should be reviewed with your personal health care professional.
2. No liability, explicit or implicit, shall be extended to the owners, maintainers, or sub-contractors of this list or Listserv location for messages posted to the list.
a. While email messages sent to the BRAINTMR's Listserv are original works of authorship, fixed in a tangible medium, copyrighted to the author, they are potentially vulnerable to misuse.
b. The list owners make no assurances of the accuracy and/or relevancy of the information posted to this list or to information referred to by messages to this list.
* In other words, give to and take from this list at your own risk.
3. You may experience interruptions in the delivery of your BRAINTMR mail. Outages on the internet, problems with your internet service provider or your e-mail account(e.g. mailbox full, new host name, etc) may cause an interruption. Internet outages or e-mail delivery failures are common and are not the responsibility of the list maintainers. Your subscription may be terminated automatically or you may be removed manually if there are delivery problems to your e-mail account. If your subscription has been terminated because of the delivery errors, you must resubscribe to resume receiving mail. If the problem is with the internet however, just wait, the mail will probably show up. Internet outages can last several hours or may last several days (if it is a U.S. holiday). DO NOT PANIC. If you have questions about missing BRAINTMR mail, contact braintmr-request@mitvma.mit.edu
THINK BEFORE YOU POST!!!
1. Always double-check your "To:" line to insure your message goes where you intend!
2. Make sure your SUBJECT line describes the content of your message
3. Send non-medical or non-support questions and other administrative concerns to braintmr-request@mitvma.mit.edu, NOT TO THE LIST.
General
Rules, Conventions Netiquette
1. Keep on topic:
Messages posted to BRAINTMR must be related to the topic of brain tumors.
2. Makes posts original, limit message quoting:
Messages which are repostings of material that can be found elsewhere on the internet are discouraged. Humor must be original. Eg: No lists of clever sayings, bumperstickers, etc. When replying to a message keep quotes from the previous message to a minimum.
3. Place no advertisements or solicitations:
Commercial advertisements are not
allowed in this group. Participants may post reviews of consumer products or services in
which they have no financial interest. Requests for financial contributions for
individuals or for groups are
not allowed.
4. Maintain Courtesy:
a. Accent the positive:
When posting messages, please comment on ideas and make positive suggestions. Please, do not personally criticize other participants.
b. Refer flames to the facilitator:
1. If you are personally criticized, please do not respond directly to the list; instead, bring the matter to the attention of facilitator by sending private email to mailto:samajane@braintrust.org. If people respond to "flames" publicly, then other parties may exercise their right to respond, and soon the discussions become out-of-control disputes or "flame wars". Please bring concerns to the facilitator.
2. Private flames that might discourage public postings are also banned from this group. Do not report private flames by posting publicly; instead, forward the troublesome messages to the facilitator at mailto:samajane@braintrust.org
5. Use proper topic keywords in "Subject" line of the message header:Post your messages with appropriate topic keyword(s), as described in the scheme listed at the end of this message. Also, when replying to messages please don't automatically use the original message's "Subject:". Instead, review your message and alter your "Subject:". If your message contains key ideas that are not captured by the original Subject:, be careful to insert new topic keyword(s)!
6. Use brief quotes only: (no periodicals or long documents) DO NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS. Attachments such as word processed documents or graphics appear like this: IJLJJJNKIHIOU(U()((HHUYFEY(*ROFIHOHFFHONCN for page after page for many subscribers. This is very unpleasant. Do not send attachments of any kind. Instead offer to mail out copies of your document or picture PRIVATELY to people who respond to your offer.
7. Include your e-mail address at the end of your message so that people may distinguish it more easily in your message and can use it to compose a response directly to you. Use the format: mailto:samajane@braintrust.org "mailto" allows some people to email you very easily.
8. Postings to listservs are original works of authorship, fixed in a tangible medium copyrighted to author. You may wish to attach a statement to this effect preceding or following your message.
9. Respect the dignity of the contributors: Do not use the BRAINTMR forum or messages in ways that disrespect or exploit the subscribers.
10. You may not post any copyrighted material on the list without written permission from the copyright holder. However, you may quote messages posted to this list when you are replying to the list, as long as you indicate whom the quote is from. For any other use of messages from the BRAINTMR list, you must contact the copyright holder.
11. By subscribing to this list, you agree to these conventions. Violators of these rules may be warned or placed on editorial review and could ultimately be suspended.

Topic Keywords in Subject Line of the Message Header:
*When your subscription begins, you will receive all message topics. You may then make changes to topics you receive using the "Set BRAINTMR TOPIC" command.
When messages are sent to BRAINTMR list(BRAINTMR@MITVMA.MIT.EDU), you can categorize them according to subject. This convention allows people to "sort" messages using the TOPIC command, thus reducing traffic and increasing efficiency. The definitions of some designated subjects follow more TBA.
ANNOUNCEment: for formal announcements of important events such as conferences, clinical trials, etc.

*Please make sure that your messages contain a designated topic keyword in the "Subject:" line. These keywords enable greater participation and flexibility for users. The keywords must end with a colon with no intervening blank, e.g. ADMIN: Multiple keywords must not be separated by a blank but only with a comma, e.g. ADMIN,MED:
1. If you want to be able to post, but cannot handle volume, set your subscription to no-mail. This would allow you to post only. This command is especially useful when you are away for a vacation, etc.
2. Only subscribers may send mail. (This protects this list from outside spam by mass mailers.) If your e-mail address changes (this can occur without you knowing it), you may have problems sending mail to the list. If you have problems, mailto:braintmr-request@mitvma.mit.edu
3. Other tips are included in the "Administrative HINTS" messages sent biweekly.
